A friend of mine recently had an accident at work and was told that he should apply for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. What is this exactly?

This is a state benefit payable if ill or disabled from an accident or disease caused by/at work.An “accident” is an incident - or series of incidents at work, not caused intentionally, and which results in injury. Whilst it is obvious in most cases, you can still ask the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Department of the DWP for clarification as to whether it was an "industrial accident". Whilst not directly relevant to the case, it its a disease the person must have: (a) Been employed (not self employed) in Great Britain, (b) Contracted the disease as a result of the work after 5th of July 1948, and (c) Carried out certain types of work. Typical (but by no means complete – there are over 70) examples of illnesses and diseases covered are: Diseases caused by working with asbestosAsthmaChronic bronchitis or emphysema DeafnessPneumoconiosis (including silicosis and asbestosis)Tenosynovitis Prescribed disease A11 (previously known as vibration white finger) Often the Claimant will need to have a medical examination to see the extent of the disability and how long it is likely to last. How badly they are disabled determines how much they get. For example, if they are classed as 30% disabled, and over 18, they will get £43.08 a week. There is a “qualifying period” of 15 weeks from the first day they are disabled by the disease or accident. Further information can be found on jobcentre plus website as to whom to claim to, or they can claim direct on www.dwp.gov.uk Claiming may affect other benefits they may already receive.
