My late father did not leave a will, we have got through most stages, but we now have recieved a letter from the dept of works and pensions asking for copies of my fathers bank statement, also stating they may have a claim againdt the will. Do we have to provide them legaly with the bank statements or can we refuse?

I presume that they want to check his statements so as to ensure that any benefits he was claiming were justified - i.e. he was financially eligible at the time. Yes, I think they can demand sight of them although I think sopme form of explanation as to why they want sight would not be out of order. The chances are though that if he was financially OK with his benefits claims, that will be the last you hear. The DWP do do these random checks.
