i purchased a car in aug 2010, it had v5 and cleared a hpi check. i insured and registered the car in my name. two months ago the police siezed the car. stating it was stolen in 2004.they started a police log but did not enter the vehicle on the stolen vehicle register.they say it will have to go o a magistrate to decide ownership. the car was a stripped down to a shell when i purchased it for 6.300. i have spent 10.500 plus labour restoring the car all reciepts kept. who should i use for legal representation. the police will not explain why the car was not registered stolen. the owner who had the car stolen moved home and didn't inform the d.v.l.a. it had two other registered keepers before me.a log book was issued in 2005. i understand all parts fitted by me with proof of purchase are mine but if i loose the car shell the parts are worthless as the car is a 1968 plymouth roadrunner, only 4 in this counrty. therefor a want the car returned or to seek compensation from the police for my loss. link to restoration attached http://www.moparuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32739

I think I would be looking at an action against DVLA and the HPI provider in the first instance. Presumably the Magistrates' matter is an application the police have made under the Police Property Act 1897 and/or interpleader proceedings. I think any action against the police would really lie if the Magistrates found in your favour and the car was still not released. You are correct about the betterment value as being owed to you. I think that you should contact all the relevant parties (one may well be the original insurance company) who may be ameneable to reaching agreement with you, and then see if there is a case against the DVLA/HPI people.
